Artist Statement3.0
My artistic ideology is to explore the relationship between what is public and private, and ways those two co-exist in modern time.
The development of our world has changed the ways we communicate drastically, this includes how we share information openly in a public sphere and how we hide secrets and privacy to our own. We are selective in terms of expose or hide ourselves to others. People are more inclined to share secrets with complete strangers rather than someone they know, to release and compensate for their compressed emotions knowing that there won’t be any consequences. Listeners might have sympathy and understanding in the secrets of other strangers, and often relate it back to themselves, to reconcile and unpack what’s on their mind as well.
This kind of secrecy sharing exists not only in every corner of the city, but also largely on the Internet. I used different media combination to place secretes in order, to map the psychological state and emotions of the sharer, in hope to shape the listener’s feelings in different ways. One of my work presents people's secrets through sound installations in the wall, simulating the tree hole where the barber reveals his voice in the fairy tale(The Donkey Ear King). The volume and the height of the installation are important to my practice as it can influence listener’s experience. In my video work, I try to explore the display of emotions by playing visual features such as colour, quick editing scenes, fast-forward etc to enhance the interpretation of secrets to viewers.
I think that digital tree hole is a modern reflection of privacy sharing, and to publicly exposing one’s privacy is to reiterate the importance of self-identity and emotional catharsis.
